Welcome to Exira - EHK

We welcome you to our school district and to our website. Our schools are located in Exira and Elk Horn, Iowa, small communities in Audubon and Shelby Counties. We enjoy a strong sense of community and benefit from a high level of parent and community involvement.

Our schools offer many amenities including a one-to-one laptop computer program, as well as strong academic and extra-curricular programs. Our two schools, preschool, kindergarten, and grades 4-8 in Exira, and preschool through 3rd grade and grades 9-12 in Elk-Horn, serve over three hundred students from preschool through 12th grade.

We know you’ll love our communities as much as we do. Take a moment to browse our website and find out what’s new in our school district. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us. We’re always happy to serve you.

A Message from our Superintendent

Halfway - New School District

The month of December is usually thought of as the halfway point through a school year. By moving from two school districts to a brand new school district, we are adjusting to the needs of being a single district. The year, as any year, has challenges we face each day. The staff has and will continue to work hard for our students, parents, and communities to provide a quality education in our new school district.

Most of the challenges come from closing out the book work of the two former districts and opening a new chapter for the new district.  Whole grade sharing really helped with transition of students and staff. Very few changes were needed as to classroom location. We did hire new staff this year and a couple of staff members moved to a different building. All said the staff has been working hard with keeping our focus on the vision and mission of our new district.

Our school district is constantly making up grading our facilities and educational structure. As for our facilities, we have put in two new boilers at the pre-k-k/middle school. Technology sure has changed in that area of plumbing. The two new boilers sit on the slap of one of the old boilers use to sit on. These two new boilers are more cost efficient and regulate themselves to save energy during different demands pending on weather conditions. We are also upgrading heating units and plumbing issues in the elementary/high school building.

Teachers are continually working hard in the curriculum areas. One of the biggest changes this year was in the math department. We have a whole new set of math curriculum that teachers and students are working through. It is challenging to both groups, and we know that it will take a couple of years to get everyone up to speed. From the information that we received about the new math curriculum, our students should be better prepared for post-secondary schooling. We will also be looking at upgrading our other curriculum areas with the hopes of dividing the curriculum areas into five categories.

Financially, we are good. Our funds are holding strong and this comes with the lowering of your school taxes. Your overall taxes may have gone up, but your school taxes should have gone down. We will be preparing our budget for 2015-2016 in February and March with the hopes of maintaining a strong solvency ration and keeping tax rates down. Enrollment has an effect on financial conditions, and our new school district lost some students from our totals last year. With the turn of the calendar year, we will be looking at what effects the decrease in enrollment will play on next year’s budget.

Have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Dean J. Schnoes
Superintendent
